What is happening to you?
Someone is using my name
People who run these campaigns often present themselves under another person’s name, sometimes that of a previous victim. This way complaints end up against an innocent person and the real culprit stays hidden. If someone uses your name, you are a victim too.
How to recognise it
- There are profiles with your name or photos that you did not create.
- People you do not know accuse you of things you did not do.
- You receive reports or complaints about messages you did not write.
What to do
- Document the fake profiles with links and screenshots and report them to the platform as identity theft. On Telegram there is the official bot @NoToScam.
- File a complaint: in Italy, impersonation is a crime (Article 494 of the Italian Criminal Code); in Switzerland, misuse of identity (Art. 179decies SCC).
- Let your contacts know that a fake profile exists.
What to avoid
- Do not create profiles yourself to unmask them.
